Overview
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year educational framework designed for students aged 11 to 16. At its core, the MYP aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed and contribute positively to the world around them. The programme fosters intellectual challenge by encouraging students to make connections between their studies and real-world contexts, preparing them for further education and life beyond the classroom.
The MYP is guided by the IB Learner Profile, a set of ten attributes that promote the development of well-rounded individuals who are principled, open-minded, reflective, and willing to take risks in their learning. These attributes shape both academic and personal growth and help cultivate a school culture grounded in respect, curiosity, and integrity.
Students engage with eight subject groups: Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Design, and Physical & Health Education. Interdisciplinary learning is a key feature, enabling students to integrate knowledge across disciplines and apply it in creative and meaningful ways. Through Global Contexts, students are encouraged to explore big ideas – such as identity, globalization, and sustainability – and make practical connections between what they learn in class and the world around them.
A central component of the MYP is the development of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills – such as communication, collaboration, organization, research, and critical and creative thinking – which help students become independent, self-directed learners. Students also participate in Service as Action, applying their learning to initiatives that benefit their communities and foster a strong sense of empathy, responsibility, and active citizenship.
In the final year of the programme (Year 5), students undertake the Personal Project, a culminating experience that showcases the skills, attitudes, and knowledge they have developed throughout their MYP journey. This independent, student-driven inquiry invites them to explore a topic of personal interest, set specific learning goals, conduct in-depth research, and produce a final outcome that reflects both their understanding and creativity. The Personal Project emphasizes ATL skills and empowers students to connect their passions with global issues in meaningful and impactful ways.
